Prom is one of those nights where what you wear actually changes how you carry yourself. The good news: looking sharp is mostly about a few decisions made in the right order. Here’s how we think about it on the floor at JMD, a local showroom in Conyers.
Suit or tuxedo? Start with the event, not the trend
A tuxedo reads more formal and more “event” — satin lapels, a crisp white shirt, a bow tie. A suit is more versatile and feels a little more personal, and you’ll get more use out of it after prom. Neither is wrong. If your prom leans black-tie or you want the full dressed-up moment, a tuxedo is the move. If you want something you can wear again to an interview, a banquet, or a wedding, a suit earns its keep.
If renting is easier this year, that works too: JMD does tuxedo rentals, and the rental includes the tuxedo, shirt, vest, and bow tie. A single rental like prom is welcome as a walk-in — no group appointment needed the way a wedding party would book.
Pick a color that still looks good in photos
You will see these pictures for years, so choose a color you’ll still like. Classic navy, charcoal, and black photograph cleanly and never look dated. If you want to stand out, do it with one deliberate choice — a burgundy jacket, a midnight-blue tux, or a bolder pattern — and keep the rest simple. Trying to make every piece “the statement” is how a look gets busy.

Fit matters more than the label
A modest jacket that fits beats an expensive one that doesn’t. The shoulder seam should sit right where your shoulder ends. The jacket should close without pulling. Sleeves should show a little shirt cuff, and trousers should break cleanly over the shoe rather than bunching. If something is close but not perfect, ask — JMD does alterations, and small adjustments are what make an outfit look like it was made for you.
Finish the look: shirt, shoes, and the small stuff
The finishing pieces are what separate “dressed up” from “put together.” A clean dress shirt, the right shoes, and a tie or bow tie that matches the formality of the jacket go a long way. Add a pocket square, the right belt, or cuff links if you want a little polish. Bring the shoes you plan to wear when you come in, so the trouser length is set against the real thing.
Coordinate with your date — lightly
If you’re matching a date, you don’t need to be head-to-toe identical. Picking up one color — a tie, a pocket square, or a vest that nods to their outfit — looks intentional without trying too hard. Bring a photo or the color name and the team can help you match it.
When to start looking
Earlier is calmer. Starting a few weeks out gives you time to choose, handle any alterations, and avoid the rush when everyone is shopping the same weekend. It also matters more here than at a big chain: when a limited piece is gone at JMD, it’s gone, and the store doesn’t simply reorder more of the same.
